Scotland - Morocco 0:1

History has a cruel habit of repeating itself. Twenty-eight years after suffering a painful defeat to Morocco at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, Scotland once again came up short against the North African side on football’s biggest stage, falling to a narrow but deserved 1-0 defeat in Boston.

The contest could hardly have started in worse fashion for Steve Clarke’s men. Before many supporters inside Boston Stadium had even settled into their seats, the Atlas Lions struck the decisive blow. Just two minutes into the match, Ismael Saibari found space inside the penalty area and calmly beat Angus Gunn to hand Morocco an early advantage.

The goal dramatically altered the flow of the game. Forced onto the front foot, Scotland had little choice but to push higher up the pitch and dominate possession. Yet breaking down Morocco’s energetic and technically gifted midfield proved an extremely difficult task. The African side controlled central areas with authority, dictating the tempo and disrupting Scotland’s attempts to establish any sustained rhythm.

Recognising the need for change, Steve Clarke turned to his bench after the interval. A series of substitutions injected urgency into the Scottish performance, and the men in dark blue responded with greater intensity. Backed by a passionate support that never stopped singing, Scotland began to apply real pressure.

Opportunities to rescue a result did emerge. Lyndon Dykes battled relentlessly inside the penalty area of Yassine Bounou, while captain Andrew Robertson drove forward tirelessly down the left flank, earning a booking after one particularly committed challenge. However, despite their determination, Scotland struggled to create the kind of clear-cut chances needed to trouble Morocco’s disciplined defensive structure.

At the other end, the experience of Achraf Hakimi proved invaluable. The Moroccan back line remained composed under pressure and repeatedly threatened on the counter-attack. Deep into stoppage time, Neil El Aynaoui had the opportunity to put the result beyond doubt, but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the target.

When the final whistle arrived, it confirmed a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Morocco and a potentially crucial three points in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
