2026 FIFA World Cup: Switzerland Beat Canada to Secure Top Spot

Switzerland underlined their status as Group B favourites at the FIFA World Cup, defeating Canada in a decisive clash to finish top of the standings. The victory not only secured first place for Murat Yakin's side but also handed the Swiss a valuable logistical advantage ahead of the Round of 32, allowing them additional recovery time and the opportunity to remain in Vancouver rather than face a demanding cross-country journey.
Following the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, head coach Murat Yakin made several bold changes to his starting XI. Ruben Vargas, Djibril Sow, and 20-year-old rising star Johan Manzambi were all handed starting roles. Manzambi, already one of the breakout performers of the tournament with two goals to his name, once again proved his growing importance to the Swiss national team.
Switzerland nearly made the perfect start when Breel Embolo found himself through on goal inside the opening minutes, only to squander a golden opportunity. Canada, knowing that a draw would be enough to maintain first place in the group, responded with several dangerous attacks led by Kyle Larin. However, Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced a composed and flawless display between the posts.
The breakthrough arrived immediately after the restart. Just 46 minutes into the contest, Johan Manzambi burst down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross to the far post, where Ruben Vargas fired a powerful finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
Eleven minutes later, Breel Embolo showcased his quality by drawing three defenders towards him before slipping an intelligent pass into the path of Manzambi, who calmly converted to double Switzerland’s advantage. At 2-0, the Swiss appeared firmly in control of the contest.
The hosts reignited hopes of a comeback in the 76th minute when substitute Promise David capitalised on a positional error from Nico Elvedi and reduced the deficit. What followed was a relentless late push from Canada, backed by a passionate home crowd. Yet the Swiss defence, marshalled superbly by Gregor Kobel, stood firm under immense pressure to preserve a crucial victory.
As a result, Switzerland advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage as Group B winners and will now face one of the tournament's best third-placed teams in the Round of 32.
