Canada Edge South Africa to Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Canada became the first nation to book a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after grinding out a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa. Jesse Marsch's side left it until stoppage time to secure a historic win and continue their impressive tournament campaign.
Both teams approached the contest with caution, prioritising defensive discipline over attacking ambition. A slow tempo, frequent misplaced passes and a lack of creativity made for a scrappy encounter that produced very few clear-cut chances for long periods.
Canada looked the more threatening whenever set-pieces came into play. In the 17th minute, Jonathan David came close to breaking the deadlock, firing narrowly wide with a first-time effort following a corner. Just before half-time, South Africa defender Motiba produced a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Derek Cornelius Bombito, whose powerful header seemed destined for the back of the net.
Boosted by their recent victory over South Korea, South Africa remained compact and disciplined throughout, sitting deep and looking to frustrate their opponents. The African side was comfortable allowing the clock to tick down, with their goalkeeper beginning to slow the game well before the interval. Their best opportunity arrived in the second half when Oswin Appollis almost curled a superb effort into the far corner, forcing Canada to stay alert.
With extra time seemingly inevitable, Canada finally found the breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time. A dangerous attack down the right flank ended with a cross that was only partially cleared by the South Africa defence. The loose ball fell perfectly for Stephen Eustáquio, who controlled it brilliantly with his chest before rifling a superb half-volley into the bottom corner to spark wild celebrations and seal a memorable 1-0 victory.
The result sends Canada into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 for the first time in the nation's history. Jesse Marsch's team will now face the winner of the last-16 tie between Morocco and Netherlands.
