FIFA has decided against rescheduling the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash between Mexico and England, according to a report from BBC Sport. The governing body had been considering an earlier kick-off because of forecasts predicting deteriorating weather conditions on matchday.

In an effort to reduce potential disruption for the teams, supporters and media, FIFA initially planned to bring the fixture forward by seven hours, moving kick-off from 03:00 on Monday to 20:00 on Sunday. However, strong objections from both the Mexican Football Federation and the Football Association, together with significant logistical challenges, prompted a rethink.

Mexican journalist Gibrán Araige suggested on social media that the governing body was preparing to abandon its revised schedule.

"It looks like FIFA is backing away from its decision to change the timetable. Everything points to the match being played on Monday. Both federations are unhappy," he wrote.

Sources close to the England camp also told BBC Sport that lengthy behind-the-scenes negotiations took place between all parties in an attempt to preserve the original schedule. Shortly before midnight British Summer Time, those discussions concluded with confirmation that the match would kick off at its originally planned time.
