Andrea Pirlo will not be appointed as the new head coach of the Italy national team, according to reports from transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. The proposed appointment has reportedly fallen through because of the former midfielder's links to Russian bookmakers.

In an attempt to address the growing controversy, Pirlo publicly explained his position regarding the partnership and released an official statement on social media. However, the clarification failed to change the outcome. Reports suggest that Giovanni Malagò, president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), refused to approve the appointment following mounting political pressure.

The decision could also have significant consequences within the FIGC. Both Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, who had identified Pirlo as their preferred candidate to lead the Azzurri, may now face uncertainty over their own roles in the federation's football structure.

Attention now turns to the FIGC meeting scheduled for 28 July, where the appointment of Italy's next head coach had been expected to receive formal approval.
