Atalanta delivered a statement performance in the Serie A Champions League race

Atalanta delivered a statement performance in the Serie A Champions League race, defeating fellow contenders Bologna 2-0 in a high-stakes showdown on Matchday 32 of the 2024–25 Italian Championship.

Only one point separated the two sides heading into the match in Bergamo, but it was Gian Piero Gasperini’s men who seized the moment. The hero of the night was Italian striker Mateo Retegui, who wasted no time putting Atalanta ahead — scoring in the third minute with a sharp finish that ignited the home crowd.

Retegui was again involved midway through the first half, setting up Croatian midfielder Mario Pašalić for Atalanta’s second goal. From there, the hosts expertly managed the game, limiting Bologna's chances and holding firm defensively.

The win propels Atalanta to third in the Serie A table with 61 points, overtaking Juventus and tightening their grip on a top-four finish. Bologna, now four points behind, drop to fifth — still within striking distance, but with the margin for error rapidly shrinking.
