Theo Hernández Offers Himself to Real Madrid – But He's Only Third on Alonso’s Left-Back Wishlist
Real Madrid continue their aggressive defensive overhaul, and left-back remains a priority for new head coach Xabi Alonso following deals for Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right and the near-completed signing of Dean Huijsen in central defence.
One name has unexpectedly entered the conversation: Theo Hernández. The AC Milan full-back has reportedly offered himself to Madrid, seeking a return to the Bernabéu where he previously spent a brief stint earlier in his career.
Theo’s Appeal – But Limited Priority
Hernández left a lasting impression on Madrid this season after a dominant Champions League group stage display against Los Blancos. However, despite his form and physical profile, he is only third on Alonso’s shortlist for the left flank.
Ferland Mendy held the position this season but struggled with recurring fitness issues, forcing Madrid to rotate frequently — a situation Alonso wants to address decisively.
Real’s Real Target: Álvaro Carreras
Alonso’s first choice is Álvaro Carreras of Benfica. Real Madrid are actively pursuing the Spanish defender and reportedly believe they can land him well below his €60 million release clause.
If negotiations for Carreras collapse, the second option is Milos Kerkez of AFC Bournemouth, another young and dynamic left-back who fits Alonso’s tactical vision.
Theo on Standby
That leaves Theo Hernández as the third-choice fallback — a surprising position for a player of his profile, but a reflection of Real’s long-term planning and focus on youth integration over short-term reunions.
