Chelsea chose to break the agreement — at a financial cost

Chelsea have opted to cut ties with Jadon Sancho after a disappointing loan spell, and will reportedly pay a £5 million penalty to avoid making the deal permanent. The winger will now return to Manchester United and Old Trafford, bringing an underwhelming chapter at Stamford Bridge to an early end.

The original agreement between Manchester United and Chelsea included a clause that obligated the London club to buy Sancho for £20 million at the end of the 2024/25 season. But following a poor campaign and little impact on the pitch, new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca reportedly made it clear that the 24-year-old was not part of his future plans.

Rather than triggering the buy option, Chelsea chose to break the agreement — at a financial cost. As per the terms of the loan deal, the Blues must now pay a £5 million fee to Manchester United for failing to fulfil the purchase clause.
