Florian Wirtz Set to Join Liverpool in Record-Breaking €150m Transfer
Florian Wirtz, the dynamic playmaker from Bayer Leverkusen, is on the verge of becoming Liverpool’s most expensive signing in history.
According to multiple reports, Wirtz is currently en route to England to undergo a medical ahead of signing a contract with Liverpool until 2030. The Reds have agreed to pay €150 million for the 21-year-old, making it the largest transfer in the club’s history — nearly doubling the fee they paid for Darwin Núñez (€85m) in the summer of 2022.
Liverpool made three official bids to secure the Bundesliga star, with their final offer matching the exact release clause embedded in Wirtz’s contract — a clause that Bayer Leverkusen were determined to uphold.
The German side played their cards smartly, capitalising on Liverpool’s urgency to wrap up the deal before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup. While the total package is valued at €150m, not all of it will be paid upfront. A significant portion includes performance-related bonuses, tied to Wirtz’s success at Anfield over the coming seasons.
The 2023/24 Bundesliga Player of the Season, Wirtz was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic campaign under Xabi Alonso. Now, he is set to bring his creative flair and vision to the Premier League.
