Almeyda's appointment marks his first venture into one of Europe's top five leagues as a head coach

Sevilla FC have officially named Matías Jesús Almeyda as their new head coach on a three-year contract, marking a significant return to the club for the former Argentina international who wore the Sevilla shirt during the 1996/97 season.

The 51-year-old replaces interim manager Joaquín Caparrós, who stepped in to finish the season after Francisco García Pimienta was dismissed in April. Almeyda's appointment marks his first venture into one of Europe's top five leagues as a head coach, after a diverse managerial journey that has taken him across South and North America, and most recently, Greece.

Almeyda's coaching résumé includes stints at River Plate, Banfield, Chivas Guadalajara, and San Jose Earthquakes. In 2022, he took over at AEK Athens and delivered remarkable success — guiding the club to a domestic double in the 2022/23 season by winning both the Greek Super League and the Greek Cup.

Now, Almeyda faces arguably his biggest challenge yet: reviving a struggling Sevilla side that narrowly escaped relegation last season, finishing just 17th in La Liga, a single point above the drop zone.
