Manchester United have officially confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the 2025/26 season, marking a significant and emotional return for one of the club’s most trusted figures.
The decision follows the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, after a turbulent spell that forced the hierarchy at Old Trafford to reassess their short-term direction. Several high-profile options were considered, including a sensational comeback for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the potential appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy. Ultimately, however, the club opted for stability, familiarity and deep-rooted knowledge of the United identity.
Carrick is a figure synonymous with modern Manchester United. As a player, he made 464 appearances for the Red Devils, becoming a cornerstone of the midfield during one of the most successful eras in the club’s history. After hanging up his boots, Carrick seamlessly transitioned into coaching, serving on the backroom staff under Jose Mourinho and later under Solskjaer.
