The match has been recorded as a 3–0 technical defeat for the “Lions of Teranga”

In a stunning and unprecedented move, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially overturned the result of the Africa Cup of Nations final played two months ago. The Appeals Committee has stripped Senegal of their title and awarded the crown to Morocco, rewriting the outcome of one of the most controversial finals in recent memory.

The original result — a 1–0 victory for Senegal on the pitch — has now been annulled. Instead, the match has been recorded as a 3–0 technical defeat for the “Lions of Teranga”, handing Morocco the trophy in dramatic and highly contentious circumstances.

At the heart of the decision lies a moment of protest that has now changed African football history. During the final on January 18 in Rabat, players led by Pape Thiaw walked off the pitch in protest against a late penalty awarded to Morocco. Although the match resumed after a 15-minute delay — and Brahim Diaz saw his penalty saved — CAF officials ruled that the temporary abandonment constituted a serious breach of tournament regulations.

The final itself had already descended into chaos. Heated clashes between players, altercations involving journalists, and bizarre scenes — including ball boys attempting to snatch a towel from Edouard Mendy — painted a picture of a match spiralling out of control. Initially, CAF responded with heavy fines, but the governing body has now taken far more drastic action.

The fallout is far from over. Senegal are expected to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, setting the stage for a legal battle that could yet reshape the final chapter of this 2025 Africa Cup of Nations saga.
