Real Madrid have officially confirmed the departure of head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, with both parties agreeing to terminate the contract by mutual consent.
The announcement comes as little surprise to supporters, as the Spanish tactician had already revealed his intention to step down ahead of the club’s final La Liga fixture of the season.
Arbeloa took charge of Real Madrid in mid-January following the departure of Xabi Alonso and oversaw 28 matches during his spell at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite guiding Los Blancos to a second-place finish in La Liga, the gap to champions Barcelona proved significant.
The season also brought disappointment in cup competitions. Real Madrid suffered a shock exit from the Copa del Rey at the Round of 16 stage after defeat to Albacete. In Europe, their UEFA Champions League journey came to an end in the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by German giants Bayern Munich.
