A New Era for Oranje: Netherlands Choose Xavi

The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has officially appointed Xavi Hernández as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team. The 46-year-old Spaniard replaces Ronald Koeman and has agreed a contract running through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment marks a fresh start for Oranje and a new chapter in Xavi's coaching career. The former FC Barcelona midfielder had been out of work since leaving the Catalan club in 2024. He now returns to the touchline for his first international management role, taking charge of a team with major ambitions on the global stage.

The decision came after a period of uncertainty at the KNVB. Several prominent names were considered for the position, including Roberto Martínez, Peter Bosz, Arne Slot, Erik ten Hag and Michael Reiziger. Ultimately, the Dutch federation opted for Xavi and his possession-based, attacking football philosophy.

The change follows a disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Netherlands were knocked out in the Round of 32 after losing to Morocco on penalties, bringing Koeman's second spell in charge to an end. Under the Dutchman, Oranje had reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024, but the World Cup exit prompted the federation to look for a new direction.

Xavi's arrival is significant beyond the change of manager. He becomes the first foreign head coach of the Dutch men's national team since Austria's Ernst Happel in 1978 — a striking appointment for a country whose football culture has traditionally placed enormous value on home-grown coaching ideas.
