Athletic Bilbao Survive Sevilla Fightback in La Liga Opener
Athletic Club kicked off their La Liga 2025/26 season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Sevilla at a rocking San Mamés, but they were made to work for it after nearly squandering a two-goal lead.
It was a perfect start for the Basque side, who raced into a 2-0 lead before half-time thanks to goals from Nico Williams and Iñigo Sancet. The hosts looked in full control heading into the break.
But the second half brought a dramatic shift. Dodi Lukebakio pulled one back for Sevilla with a precise finish, and just ten minutes later, Lucien Agoumé levelled the score — stunning the home crowd.
However, the drama wasn’t over. In the 81st minute, substitute Aitor Navarro rose highest to meet a cross from the right, nodding home the winner and sealing all three points for Athletic Bilbao.
