Santos put Neymar contract talks on hold amid fitness and salary concerns
Santos have reportedly paused negotiations over a new deal with Neymar, citing concerns about the forward’s fitness and wage demands. The 33-year-old has missed most of the current season through injury, though relations between the player and the club remain positive.
Neymar’s current contract runs until December 2025, but Santos’ management has decided to wait for the results of an internal review before resuming discussions. The decision reflects growing uncertainty over whether the club can justify a long-term commitment given its financial situation and Neymar’s recent fitness record.
Since returning from Al Hilal in January, Neymar has made just 21 appearances, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He has been sidelined since September with a hip injury. Santos insist there is no conflict between the two sides, but say an extension will only be considered after the player’s expected full recovery in November.
With the club currently fighting to avoid relegation, Santos must carefully assess whether they can afford to retain their superstar — a local icon, but one who has spent more time in the treatment room than on the pitch in 2025.
