The head coach of Olympique Lyonnais has been handed a severe punishment

Paulo Fonseca, the head coach of Olympique Lyonnais, has been handed a severe punishment following his aggressive confrontation with a referee during a recent Ligue 1 match. The incident has sent shockwaves through French football, with the disciplinary measures far exceeding initial expectations.

The controversy unfolded when Fonseca approached referee Benoît Millot, leaning in forehead-to-forehead while loudly expressing his grievances. This act was deemed highly aggressive, prompting the LFP (Ligue de Football Professionnel) to take swift and strict disciplinary action. "Such behavior is unacceptable and undermines the integrity of the game," stated an LFP spokesperson.

Initially, speculation suggested a seven-month ban for the Portuguese coach. However, the final decision was even harsher: Fonseca has been suspended for nine months, lasting until November 30, 2025. Additionally, he is barred from entering the team's dressing room until September 15, further complicating his ability to manage the squad.

Referee Benoît Millot, recounting the incident, revealed that he was taken aback by Fonseca's outburst. "I hadn't even finished announcing my decision when he confronted me. It was shocking and completely unexpected," Millot stated.
