Diego Simeone

The Madrid derby takes center stage in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, with the first leg set for Tuesday, March 4, as Real Madrid hosts Atlético Madrid at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu. Ahead of the clash, Atlético’s head coach Diego Simeone faced multiple questions about his team's status compared to Spain’s footballing giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Respect, but No Fear

“This match is built on mutual respect for a very strong opponent, and I am sure they feel the same way about us. I don’t think previous encounters will have any impact. This is the Champions League, and if we were facing a team from outside La Liga, the discussion would be different. It would be about what we need to do to win, not past meetings,” Simeone said in his pre-match press conference.

Fine Margins Will Decide the Derby

Atlético has lost just once in the last seven derbies, and when asked whether details rather than tactics would determine the outcome, Simeone agreed:

“At this level, the small details make the difference. Both Real and ourselves have been through these battles before, and we understand what’s at stake. The team that manages those moments better will advance.”

Are Atlético the Favorites?

“I don’t really understand the concept of ‘favorites’ in a match like this,” Simeone responded. “We respect our opponents, but we also know our own strengths. Our goal is to impose our game and create problems for Real.”

Building a Winning Mentality

Simeone was also asked about the growth of his side, considering their unbeaten record against Barcelona and Real Madrid this season.

“The question already contains the answer,” he smiled. “Barcelona and Real Madrid have incredible histories, and that doesn’t change. But we are a club that continues to grow, and that’s something special.”

Style and Adaptability

Atlético has been devastating on the counterattack this season, something that hasn’t always been the hallmark of Simeone’s side.

“Scoring goals in transition is progress, isn’t it? I never dismissed counterattacking football. It’s part of Atlético’s DNA, and we continue to refine our strengths,” the Argentine tactician explained.

Winning La Liga or Knocking Out Real?

When asked whether winning La Liga or eliminating Real Madrid from the Champions League was more realistic, Simeone kept his focus sharp.

“I always concentrate on what’s ahead of us. Right now, my focus is solely on tomorrow’s game.”

Facing the Real Madrid of the Champions League

The Argentine was also questioned about Real Madrid’s remarkable record in the Champions League, given Atlético’s previous struggles against Los Blancos in the competition.

“History speaks for itself. Real Madrid’s success in this tournament is undeniable. But tomorrow, we have a fantastic opportunity, and we are ready to take it.”

With Atlético Madrid riding high and Real Madrid’s pedigree in Europe unmatched, the stage is set for another thrilling chapter in their rivalry at the Bernabéu.
