Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially announced the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new head coach, replacing Vítor Pereira at Molineux. The 41-year-old leaves Middlesbrough to take charge of a Premier League side sitting bottom of the table.

The Midlands club confirmed that an agreement was reached with Middlesbrough over compensation for Edwards, who previously managed Luton Town in the Premier League. A former Wolves defender, Edwards made 111 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2008.

In a statement, Middlesbrough said: “Rob signed a three-year deal with us in the summer, but once he made clear his desire to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, we reluctantly accepted compensation terms.”

The appointment comes as Wolves find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after a dismal start to the season — collecting just two points from 11 games.
