Two London derbies. Two victories. And, crucially, three more points in the bank for Arsenal. After defeating Tottenham Hotspur last week, Mikel Arteta’s side followed it up with a hard-fought 2–1 win over Chelsea, ensuring they keep pace with Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Controlled Chaos from Set Pieces

The first half unfolded in curious fashion. Arsenal were measured rather than explosive, content to wait for openings as Chelsea repeatedly surrendered possession in dangerous areas. While it would be unfair to suggest Arteta’s men rely solely on corners, their growing reputation from set pieces was once again reinforced.

All the goals on the afternoon stemmed from dead-ball situations — and the opening two involved decisive deflections.

The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute. Bukayo Saka delivered from the right, Gabriel Magalhães nodded the ball back across goal, and William Saliba applied the finishing touch — via a deflection off Sarr — to make it 1–0.

Chelsea responded in first-half stoppage time, and in equally chaotic fashion. There were shouts for handball after Declan Rice appeared to divert the ball toward his own goal, a moment that could have sparked VAR debate. Instead, the visitors struck from the resulting pressure. From a second corner, Reece James delivered and Piero Hincapié rose to level the score at 1–1.

Timber’s Decisive Moment

The second half followed a similar pattern. Chelsea initially looked sharper going forward, raising questions about how Arsenal would respond. The answer came in the 66th minute.

This time there were no deflections. Declan Rice whipped in a precise cross and Jurrien Timber powered home a header to restore the lead.

Four minutes later, the momentum swung even further. Pedro Neto, already booked for dissent, lunged into a rash challenge on Gabriel Martinelli and was shown a second yellow card — the seventh time this season Chelsea have been reduced to ten men.

Despite the numerical advantage, Arsenal could not extend their lead. Eberechi Eze tested Robert Sánchez at one end, while at the other David Raya preserved the advantage by denying Alejandro Garnacho late on.

The final whistle confirmed a 2–1 victory — a maximum return from one of the toughest stretches of Arsenal’s campaign. Meanwhile, Chelsea, with just two points from their last three matches, slip out of the top five and risk missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.
