UEFA Considers Abolishing Extra Time in Champions League Knockout Matches
According to reports, UEFA is considering eliminating extra time in Champions League knockout matches. If approved, matches tied after 90 minutes in the second leg would proceed directly to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
This change is reportedly planned for implementation starting in 2027. The move aims to remove the advantage held by the team playing the second leg at home, following the earlier removal of the away goals rule by UEFA.
The next Champions League matches are set to take place on February 11, including the highly anticipated clash between Manchester City and Real Madrid in the playoff stage.
