Former Brazil national team captain Lúcio has been hospitalised following a domestic accident involving an exploding fireplace at his home in Brasília, local media reports.

The 47-year-old World Cup winner is said to be in stable condition after suffering burns caused by a malfunctioning eco-friendly fireplace on Thursday evening. His wife, Marília Forgiani, who was nearby at the time, was unharmed.

According to a statement released on social media by the couple, Lúcio remains conscious and is expected to make a full recovery. They described the incident as a domestic accident and thanked well-wishers for their support.

Last of the 2002 World Champions

Lúcio retired from professional football in 2020, closing the chapter on an illustrious career that made him the last active player from Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad.

Over his career, the commanding centre-back played for several top clubs across Brazil and Europe, including Internacional, São Paulo, Palmeiras, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and most memorably, Inter Milan. He lifted the UEFA Champions League title with Inter in 2010 under manager José Mourinho.
