Messi is on course to smash even more records before the postseason begins

Lionel Messi has once again etched his name into Major League Soccer history books, delivering another masterclass performance for Inter Miami in a commanding 4-0 victory over New York City FC.

The Argentine icon recorded two goals and an assist, becoming the first player in MLS history to register 35+ goal contributions in two consecutive seasons. With 37 total goal involvements (goals + assists) already in the current campaign—and five matches still to play — Messi is on course to smash even more records before the postseason begins.

Thanks to his brilliance, Inter Miami have now clinched a spot in the MLS Playoffs, positioning themselves not just for a title push but also for a potential second straight Supporters' Shield.

In a moment of leadership and class, the 38-year-old Messi even passed up a penalty opportunity, allowing close friend and strike partner Luis Suárez to take the spot-kick. But even that gesture didn’t stop him from closing in on another massive milestone.

Messi now ties with Zlatan Ibrahimović for the third-highest number of goal contributions in a single MLS season. Ahead of him? Only Carlos Vela, whose record of 49 goal involvements in 2019 still stands at the summit. With five league fixtures remaining, Messi has a golden opportunity to surpass it—and rewrite the record books once again.

🔢 Messi’s Current MLS Season Stats:

  • 37 goal contributions (goals + assists)
  • 1st player in MLS history with 35+ G/A in back-to-back seasons
  • Currently tied 3rd all-time for most G/A in a single season
  • Still has 5 matches to play
