France have marched into the final eight of FIFA World Cup 2026 after navigating a demanding Round of 16 tie against Paraguay. Didier Deschamps’ side ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory to end Paraguay's World Cup campaign.
The sweltering conditions in Philadelphia shaped the contest just as much as Paraguay's rigid tactical setup. Refusing to deviate from their robust defensive blueprint, Gustavo Alfaro's men deployed a deeply compact, multi-layered low block that swarmed the French attackers. Every time a Les Bleus player received possession in the final third, they were instantly closed down by multiple Paraguayan defenders, rendering individual dribbling sequences largely ineffective.
France won a succession of corners during an attritional first half, which briefly appeared to be their most viable route to a breakthrough. However, Deschamps' side lacked a clinical edge from set-pieces, leaving the Paraguayan goalkeeper largely untested before the interval.
France altered their approach early in the second half, looking to test Paraguay from distance. Manu Koné came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 54th minute, unleashing a powerful effort destined for the roof of the net, only for a superb fingertip save to tip the ball over the crossbar. The breakthrough eventually arrived thanks to Désiré Doué, who made an instant impact off the bench by winning a penalty just minutes after his introduction. A knee-to-knee collision inside the area left little room for debate, with referee Ilgiz Tantashev pointing to the spot following a brief VAR confirmation.
Paraguay tried every trick in the book to delay the penalty and unnerve Kylian Mbappé, but the France captain remained unflappable. He stepped up to confidently fire the penalty home and open the scoring.
With lengthy stoppage time to come, another half-hour of tense football followed the breakthrough. France dominated possession but refrained from committing excessive numbers forward, shifting into a disciplined shape. This forced Paraguay to leave spaces behind as they chased an equaliser, creating opportunities for France to strike on the counter. While Mbappé found himself in dangerous goalscoring positions on three further occasions, a second goal from open play eluded the favourites. Nonetheless, the single strike proved more than enough to seal progress.
France now advance to a highly anticipated quarter-final showdown against Morocco, scheduled for July 9.
