Gregg Popovich, the winningest coach in NBA history, is stepping down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs after an extraordinary 29-season tenure. The 76-year-old will transition into a new role as the team’s President of Basketball Operations, the franchise confirmed in an official statement.

During his nearly three-decade run, Popovich amassed an unmatched 1,422 regular-season victories — the most by any coach in NBA history — and guided the Spurs to five NBA Championships, with the last title coming in 2014. His legacy is etched in basketball history as one of the game's true masterminds and mentors.

Popovich had been on a medical leave since suffering a mild stroke in November, shortly before a home win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his absence, the Spurs struggled to find consistency and missed the NBA Playoffs for a fifth straight year, finishing the regular season at 34–48.
