This long-overdue shift reflects the rising global prominence of women's football

The prestigious Ballon d'Or 2025 is poised to mark a revolutionary moment in football history. France Football has announced that, for the first time ever, the number of awards for women will match those given to men.

Alongside the traditional Women's Ballon d'Or, three brand-new accolades will be introduced: the Women's Kopa Trophy (for the best young female player), the Women's Yashin Trophy (for the best female goalkeeper), and the Women's Gerd Müller Trophy (for the top goalscorer in women’s football).

Previously, male players had access to multiple individual awards, while female players were limited to just one. This long-overdue shift reflects the rising global prominence of women's football, a movement that continues to gain momentum across all levels of the sport.

The new trophies will recognise performances from 1 August 2024 to 31 July 2025, and existing awards for Best Women’s Coach and Best Women’s Club will remain part of the ceremony.

The Ballon d'Or 2025 ceremony is scheduled for 22 September in Paris. Last year, Spanish midfielder Rodri took home the top prize after a stellar campaign with both Manchester City and the national team.
