Semi-automatic VAR approved for the World Championship
FIFA has officially announced that the 2022 World Cup will use the semi-automatic VAR system to determine offsides.
It will assist the referees in quickly determining an offside position. The system automatically determines the location of the ball and creates three-dimensional models of the position of the players.
'The new technology uses 12 special cameras installed under the roof of the stadium to track the ball. It also takes into account the 29 points of the body of each player, tracking their exact position on the field 50 times per second. These 29 points include all parts of the body and limbs that are relevant for determining offsides', explains the FIFA press service.
The system was tested at the last Club World Cup and, according to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, it performed very well. Infantino noted that everyone at FIFA was satisfied with the use of this new technology.
