Luis Enrique

After guiding Paris Saint-Germain to the UEFA Champions League final with back-to-back victories over Arsenal, manager Luis Enrique couldn’t resist a tongue-in-cheek response to a long-standing meme in football circles.

“Well, the Farmers League, you know? We are the Farmers League,” the Spaniard said with a wry smile at his post-match press conference, responding to a question about eliminating three Premier League sides in succession.

It was a cheeky nod to the often-dismissive term used to describe Ligue 1, viewed by critics as lacking competitiveness compared to the likes of the English Premier League or La Liga. But PSG’s road to the final tells a different story.

The French champions knocked out Liverpool — the group stage’s most dominant team — in the Round of 16, followed by a gritty quarter-final triumph over Aston Villa. Now, after dispatching Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate, PSG have beaten three consecutive English opponents, widely seen as products of the world’s toughest domestic league.

The result? PSG are into only their second ever Champions League final, with a golden chance to secure the club’s first European crown when they face Inter Milan in Munich on May 31.
